“Island of Pelicans” in Spanish, Alcatraz became known as the military and ultra-secure prison for dangerous criminals. Even though it is closed now, your imagination will be activated as soon as you reach this legendary place yourself…
Our knowledgeable tour guide will pick you up in a luxury vehicle and ensure that it will be a memorable trip. The tour to Alcatraz starts with a visit to the picturesque fishing quay, where boats reach the island. Next, you will take a pleasant ride to the island by boat, enjoying a fantastic view of the city. Reaching the island, you will go to the hill where the prison is located; it was functioning until the beginning of the century.
You will have the unique opportunity for personal inspection of the cells, dining room, and even the isolator, where the famous Al Capone was contained, as well as other criminals. You will learn a lot of interesting facts about the island and its history. For example, about 34 prisoners tried to escape from it, and in 1962 the most famous escape took place, but the fate of the runaways is still unknown. Now Alcatraz is included in the US National Reserves System.

Had a great time on this tour. It was quite a learning experience and getting to see the old jail cell where Al Capone was held was very cool. A must do when visiting San Francisco. Book in advance to ensure you get the day / time slot that you want. Fascinating to tour the island and imagine it how it was when in use as a prison… awful conditions, made worse in some of the punishment cells. Our tour guide Courtney was very knowledgeable and gave us plenty of information along the way, including regarding the wildlife that now inhabits the island. Incredible views of SF and the bridges. Fantastic tour.
